Explosive Clad Plate ASME SB127

ASME SA516 Gr.70 Explosive Cladding Plate with ASME SB127 monel 400, Explosion Bonded Clad Plate

ASME SA516 Gr.70 CARBON STEEL CLDDING SB127 MONEL 400 PLATE means a plate where the structural base material is carbon steel conforming to SA-516 Grade 70, and it is clad (bonded) on one or both sides with Monel 400 alloy conforming to SB-127.

Base Material

SA516 Gr.70 Carbon Steel

-- Indicates a minimum yield strength of 38,000 psi (260 MPa). This steel offers good strength and formability for pressure vessels, tanks, and structural components operating at moderate temperatures.

Cladding Material

SB127 Monel 400 Plate

--a nickel-copper alloy (~67% Ni, ~23% Cu) renowned for its:

Excellent corrosion resistance in seawater, brine, and a wide range of acids and alkalis.

Good strength and toughness over a wide temperature range.

Resistance to chloride ion stress-corrosion cracking.

Non-magnetic properties

Purpose of Cladding:

  • This construction combines the cost-effectiveness and structural strength of carbon steel with the superior corrosion resistance of Monel 400.

  • The carbon steel provides the primary strength and thickness required for pressure containment or structural support.

  • The Monel 400 layer protects the carbon steel from aggressive corrosive environments it would otherwise rapidly degrade in.

Common Cladding Material Combinations (Structural Base + Corrosion-Resistant Cladding)

Base Material Cladding Material Key Properties Common Applications
Carbon Steel
(e.g., SA516 Gr.60/70)
Stainless Steel 316/316L
(UNS S31600/S31603)
Moderate corrosion resistance (acids, chlorides), cost-effective. Chemical tanks, food processing, marine components.
Carbon Steel
(SA516 Gr.70)
Monel 400
(UNS N04400)
Superior seawater/acid resistance, non-magnetic, high strength. Offshore platforms, seawater heat exchangers, HF acid reactors.
Carbon Steel
(SA285 Gr.C)
Inconel 625
(UNS N06625)
Extreme corrosion/oxidation resistance, high-temperature strength (>1000°C). Flue gas desulfurization (FGD), aerospace, nuclear.
Carbon Steel
(SA516 Gr.70)
Hastelloy C-276
(UNS N10276)
Resists pitting/crevice corrosion in chlorides, acids, and sour gas. Chemical reactors, pollution control, pharmaceutical.
Stainless Steel 304L Titanium Gr.2
(UNS R50400)
Excellent for chlorides, seawater, oxidizing acids; lightweight. Desalination plants, chlorine processing, heat exchangers.
Carbon Steel Nickel 200/201
(UNS N02200/N02201)
Resists caustics, high thermal/electrical conductivity. Caustic evaporators, alkali processing, electronics.
Stainless Steel 316L Tantalum
(UNS R05200)
Unmatched corrosion resistance (acids except HF), biocompatible. HCl reactors, medical implants, semiconductor equipment.
Carbon Steel Copper-Nickel 90/10
(UNS C70600)
Marine biofouling resistance, erosion/corrosion protection. Ship hulls, condensers, seawater piping.

Key Characteristics of Cladding Materials:

  • Base Thickness: Predominantly carbon steel (SA-516 Gr. 70).

  • Clad Thickness: A relatively thin layer of Monel 400 (SB-127), typically specified as a minimum nominal thickness or as a percentage of the total thickness.

  • Bond: The two metals are metallurgically bonded (usually by roll bonding or explosion bonding) to ensure integrity and good heat transfer.

  • Performance: The plate behaves structurally like carbon steel but exposes the highly corrosion-resistant Monel 400 to the process fluid or environment.

When to Use Cladding vs. Solid Alloy?

1>. Cladding: High-pressure vessels, heat exchangers, large structures needing corrosion resistance.
2>. Solid Alloy: Small components, extreme temperatures/purity (e.g., semiconductor furnaces).

For specific project needs (e.g., temperature, acid concentration), consult corrosion charts to select the optimal cladding alloy!

Applications

  • Pressure vessels and heat exchangers handling corrosive chemicals (e.g., HF acid, chlorides, caustic).

  • Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers and ductwork.

  • Marine and offshore components exposed to seawater.

  • Chemical processing equipment (reactors, tanks, columns).

  • Pulp and paper digesters and bleach washers.

  • Desalination plant components.
